Question

Asked 1/16/2012

What tax form should I use?

I worked in 2011 from Jan - April and I am a college student receiving financial aid and loans. I receive the Pell grant, another grant and subsidized and un-subsidized loans. I do not receive public assistance, child support or any additional income. I have few assets and I rent my living space. I do have my 1098 and my W-2.

You will need your basic tax forms that being your W-2 tax form. From the looks of what I have read here that is all you are going to need to file your taxes this year. If you have no children and are only going to school filing your taxes should be quite simple this year.

You should as I am in your same situation use TaxSlayer or Turbo Tax to file your taxes this year. Turbo Tax has free editions you can use and it is really worth it. The online tax programs make filing your taxes quite simple. As well the tax programs will help answer your questions like the one you have asked here.

So if you have worked this tax year and earned income then all you need is your pay stubs and your W-2 tax form. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask them here on WebAnswers.

Thank you so much for your time. Have a good day.

If you received education assistance in excess of your tuition and qualified fees, you might have taxable income there. I mention this because of the Pell Grants, which are generously offered to assist with your living expenses while in school.

You are probably able to file on a 1040-EZ form. Don't forget to check your state's filing requirements.
