For what reason would a father need to stop paying child support if his child has turned 18 and is graduating and going to college. For what reason would a father need to stop paying child support if his child turned 18 and is graduating? |

I guess the question is WHEN can a father stop paying child support, as he could continue to do so as long as he wishes. In any event, the answer is state-specific and also depends upon the order of the court that set the child support payments.
While some states require child support payments until the child reaches 18, many states require that it continue past 18, if the child is still in high school. Others require child support be continued until the child is 21, or even later.
