Child support accross state lines when am I going to see any money? Illinois/Indiana The divorce is in Illinois but I'm now living with my parents in Indiana about 15 min's from the state line. My lawyer put in for the child support to be taken directly out of his check and I am pretty sure its going threw Child support enforcement. This happend about 2 weeks ago and even though my soon to be ex called me up complaining that his checks are being garnished I've yet to see anything. How much longer till I will see some money? I have nothing and my parents are getting sick of supporting his kids. |

It can take up to 6 weeks to get the first check. If he is being garnished the work is in process. Although this is a real issue for you right now it is the BEST way to do this. You may get several checks at one time. The process of opening the file in the one state assigning a number logging it to the 1st states system then sending it you your state and again logging all the information and setting up your file does take time.
Once you are in the system you will be able to see the payments right online. You will know from the date it is posted that it will get to you or to your bank within a few hours or days. There is normally a 2 weeks delay in getting the money from the point of his payment to your hands. If he quits his job the amount owed will still accrue until they can attach him and the arrears at the new job. He is required to make payments even if he changes jobs and there is a lapse in time.
I know you do not want to hear that you may be waiting another 2 to 4 weeks. But armed with the knowledge you may be able to make other arrangements to help with the children until this all gets resolved.

3 Months is unconscionable. How do they expect you to manage? Head over to the county offices and see if you can get a temporary welfare/food stamp order till it comes through. If the child is under 5 you would be eligible for WIC too. Just because your living with your family does not mean you aren't eligible for you and your child. Then at least you can help them out a bit with that.
Thanks for the Award, but really 3 months I would be lighting a few fires right now.
