Can I Keep My Tenncare

When i had my son his father and i were not 2gether but he was still in his life and knew that for me and my son to keep our tenncare he would have to pay child support so he has been. we have recently decided to try and work things out and get back 2gether. we have been off and on for 5 years not and our son is 2. my son is covered under his insurance as a secondary as well. if we decide to move in with other will i lose my tenncare since we are not married and he pays child support?

First of all, the Tenncare should be secondary insurance, not primary.

Secondly, Tenncare should be informed of the child support that you are receiving. If they have not been informed of the child support, this is problematic. This could change any out-of-pocket responsibility.

Lastly, yes, you will need to update your financial information with Tenncare when he moves in. This would be because I am assuming you will be combining your incomes and/or he will be contributing to the monthly bills.

Oh, one more thing, if he moves in, child support needs to be updated as well.

Hi, cort_0521, and welcome to WebAnswers.

Whether or not you would lose TennCare if the child's father were to move back in with you would depend upon YOUR status and the kind of TennCare you are addressing - TennCare Medicaid or TennCare Standard.

You might want to contact your DHS social worker and simply ask the question directly.

Thank you for your question.

Tenncare is the reason they took him for child support. thats the only way me and our son could keep insurance after i had him because i was going to school and we were not married. tenncare is his secondary that was a typo. it is not medicaid and my office where im located has horrible workers and i cant ever speak with anyone that knows the answer and they never return anyones calls. you cant ever get an appointment they are always confusing. we have actually filed complaints as well so i thought i could get the feedback here thanks for the answers

Well, TennCare Standard should remain available to your son, but I feel uncomfortable saying to you with certainty that that is the case. Perhaps, you might call (800) 342-3145, as a means around your local office.

In what county are you and I might be able to find another resource?

Tenncare is your state's Medicaid program. Many states change the name of Medicaid to reflect the state. This is because Tenncare (Medicaid) is funded by both state and federal funds.

Your complaint is not unusual. It is always very difficult to get through the state agency's healthcare program. I have often wondered if there are really people who work there or if there is just an automated machine that can't tell the difference between a zip code and a phone number.

Try Tenncare's website with a listing of contact information:

http://www.tn.gov/tenncare/quick-contactus.html

The child support is going to change if your significant other moves in. The Tenncare will most likely change, too, probably to be an increase in out-of-pocket costs, at the least. You will have to update all of the information with them. Also, depending upon who your provider is (your physician), sometimes the office can be very helpful with your questions and need to contact someone at Tenncare. Someone at the doctor's office may have a direct line to a person there.

But, TennCare Standard is specifically for those under 19 and is separate from Medicaid.

Well, that doesn't make sense because that is only available for children without other health insurance coverage, yet he is covered under Dad's policy. I suspect he is under the regular program, or perhaps Tenncare has no idea he has other coverage?

Regardless, all the info needs to be updated. The person asking the question will probably keep her policy with a higher out-of-pocket cost, and possibly the son, too.
